The Auditorio de Tenerife will host Tenerife International Viola Competition 2025 as part of the activities comprising Viola Fest. The competition will take place in two parts in the auditorium’s Chamber Hall: the semifinal on Monday, 17 November, with 12 competitors in the morning and afternoon; and the final on Wednesday, 19 November, with four competitors who will perform in the afternoon with Cuarteto Schumann and pianist Javier Lanis.
The competition seeks to promote innovative musical undertakings and to disseminate the archipelago’s cultural offerings through Tenerife Viola Masterclass, the Asociación Cultural Resonancias and the Auditorio de Tenerife.
Tenerife International Viola Competition
On 17 November, Tenerife will become the viola capital of the world, with the first edition of the Tenerife International Viola Competition. The opening round will take spectators on a sonic journey that will join Canarian identity and the islanders’ international vocation. The programme is to start with European Romanticism, including works of Brahms, Schumann, Schubert and Franck, along with an encore inspired by Spanish or Latin American culture as a reflection of the interaction of local and universal traditions.
The premiere of Las Nieblas de San Borondón (The Mists of San Borondón), a commissioned work of composer and violist Garth Knox, will among the programme’s highlights, with a score that combines the ‘arroró’ Canarian lullaby and the melodies of the ‘pito herreño‘ transverse flute with a contemporary language of great evocative power.
The 12 competitors, hailing from Germany, China, Portugal, Korea, the United States, Japan and Spain, were selected from over 50 contenders through an elimination process that tested their skills with works of Telemann and Reger, in addition to the Paganini Caprices.
A prestigious jury of international experts —Nobuko Imai, Timothy Ridout, Macarena Pesutic, Garth Knox and Veit Hertenstein— will ensure that the competition adheres to the highest standards, putting the Canary Islands on the worldwide cultural map.
The spectacular finale on 19 November will bring together the four finalists in a breathtaking programme: Bach’s magnificent ‘Chaconne’ and Joaquín Turina’s ‘Escena Andaluza op. 7‘, with the accompaniment of Cuarteto Schumann and pianist Javier Lanis. A unique opportunity for spectators to enjoy virtuosity, tradition and innovation united in the heart of the Atlantic
