Alfonso Sebastián

Born in Zaragoza in 1974, Alfonso Sebastián studied piano with Mª Pilar Armijo and harpsichord with José Luis González Uriol at the city’s Conservatoire. He continued his training at the Conservatoire National Supérieur in Paris, specialising in fortepiano with Patrick Cohen and studying orchestral conducting with Claire Levacher. He has also attended masterclasses with Jan Willem Jansen, Gustav Leonhardt, Lars-Ulrik Mortensen, Jacques Ogg and Paul Badura-Skoda, among others.

He is regularly invited to conduct ensembles and orchestras including the Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla, Orquesta Barroca de Tenerife, Vigo430, Bilbao Symphony Orchestra and Orquesta del Liceo de Salamanca, and is a member of Los Músicos de Su Alteza. He also collaborates regularly with the University of Salamanca Baroque Orchestra, La Tempestad, Al Ayre Español, Orpheus Musicus and the Castile and León Symphony Orchestra.

His discography includes a recording of Handel cantatas for alto with Gabriel Díaz (Eudora, 2026); Zelenka’s six trio sonatas (Genuin Classics, 2026); the complete Bach sonatas for violin and harpsichord with Andoni Mercero (Eudora, 2020); and recordings of works for two harpsichords by Luigi Boccherini and Iberian concertos for harpsichord and orchestra (IBS), both with Silvia Márquez and La Tempestad.

With Los Músicos de Su Alteza, he has also recorded Nebra’s Miserere and La divina Filotea, villancicos by J. R. Samaniego, Nebra’s opera Amor aumenta el valor, and Roman oratorios by Carissimi and Luigi Rossi for Alpha.

Alongside his musical career, Sebastián works as a freelance translator and has published translations of crime and historical fiction and art history monographs with publishers including Grijalbo and Electa. He translated Quantz’s treatise on flute playing into Spanish (Dairea, 2016) and contributed to the Spanish translation of C. P. E. Bach’s treatise on keyboard playing. He currently directs Dairea’s Theorica Musicæ series.

Since 1999, he has held a permanent teaching post in harpsichord and basso continuo at the Salamanca Professional Conservatoire of Music.
