Atenea Quartet

Atenea Quartet

string quartet

Quartet Atenea has swiftly established itself as a leading force among Catalonian chamber ensembles since its formation in Barcelona in 2019. Recognised for its versatility and musical commitment, the quartet explores a broad repertoire spanning from 16th-century works to contemporary premieres.During its short but brilliant professional trajectory, the quartet has received accolades such as Prix Jeunes Solistes Credit Suisse 2023 (the first quartet to receive this award), El Primer Palau 2022 and the Orpheus Chamber Music Competition. The ensemble has also performed abroad on world-renowned stages, including the Lucerne Festival, Wigmore Hall, the Barcelona String Quartet Biennial, the Stadtcasino Basel, the Vilabertran Schubertíada, the Wissembourg International Music Festival, the Aix-en-Provence Festival, and the Fundación Juan March. In 2023, Quartet Atenea was chosen as YCAT Artists by Young Classical Artists Trust and as a resident member of the ProQuartet network. Quartet Atenea has demonstrated its deep commitment to contemporary creation with premieres at home and abroad of works of composers such as Raquel García-Tomás, Antoni Ros-Marbà and Mauro Hertig. The ensemble has recently premiered works of Elisenda Fábregas and Sergi Puig, commissioned by Palau de la Música Catalana and L’Auditori de Barcelona. The quartet is also firmly committed to broadening the traditional repertoire by including 16th- and 17th-century works in its recitals. This offers a new perspective on a repertoire conceived before the emergence of the string quartet as an instrumental formation and as a forum for exploring new sounds and approaches to interpretation. At this time, Quartet Atenea continues its musical training at the Hochschule für Musik in Basel and is part of the string quartet chair at the International Institute of Chamber Music in Madrid. The quartet has also attended academies and master classes, including the Prussia Cove International Seminar, the Swiss Chamber Academy, and the Aix-en-Provence Festival Academy.
