Delio Island
Mireia Vila Soriano and Julian Hackemberg
DELIO ISLAND is a live-arts project founded and jointly directed by Valencia-born visual artist, set designer and costume designer Mireia Vila Soriano and performer, author and sound artist Julian Hackenberg, who hails from Isny (Germany). Both have been involved in a wide variety of artistic projects across Europe, in multiple venues and theatres. The two works at the intersection of visual art, sound, the word and the body. In their processes, all elements of the stage have the same compositional value. They believe in expanded theatrical drama, in which the onstage performance does not depend on a single language or discipline but on an ongoing dialogue among them all. Every work is research into itself. The two focus on unseen perspectives of current events and untold stories, seeking ways to bring them to light through live art. They use interviews, scientific documents and poetry to generate their texts. Their sonic context is based on field recordings and the broken remains of melodies, and their aesthetic imagery is steeped in minimalism and glitch. These diverse disciplines act horizontally, giving form to their live, performative pieces. One of the essential components of their works is the interculturality of the participants. This ensures a diversity of vantage points which look in from the outside, allowing a global analysis of society. Delio Island took part in the seventh Spanish-German Cultural Encounter, a collaboration between Instituto Cervantes and Goethe Institut at Conde Duque in Madrid, with the project Bye Bye Now / Que Te Jodan Forever, which cynically celebrates the death of European values. Delio Island recently premiered its latest project, Equilibrium, at the Russafa Escènica festival in Valencia, a live show that combines music, scientific study, narration, sound art and stage aesthetics in a live reflection on death that connects the biological truth of our bodies to the story of a person who committed suicide in 2021.
