trombone

One of the most influential brass players of our time, now a soloist, conductor, and pedagogue, Ian Bousfield has been at the top of his profession for over 40 years, having formerly been principal trombone of the Vienna Philharmonic and the London Symphony, in an orchestral career spanning 30 years. As a soloist, he has appeared with, amongst others, Riccardo Muti, Michael Tilson Thomas, Sir Neville Marriner and Kent Nagano with the Vienna Philharmonic, London Symphony, London Philharmonic, Montreal Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Philharmonic. He has recorded for EMI, Chandos and Camerata. More recently, his conducting career has taken off, and Ian is now regarded as one of the world's foremost brass conductors. He has conducted the Oslo Philharmonic, Liceu Opera, Danish Radio Symphony, Copenhagen Opera, Sønderborg Symphony, Bern Symphony, Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, Asturias Symphony, Nordland Opera, and New World Symphony. He is a professor of trombone at the Hochschule der Künste in Bern and the Royal Academy of Music in London. With over 70 of his former students now working professionally, some at the highest possible level, he may be considered one of the most successful brass pedagogues of all time. His students have also won the most prestigious competitions, including the ARD, Royal Overseas League, Aeolus, and ITF competitions. His podcast has had a significant impact on musicians worldwide, and he enjoys helping emerging talent in Europe as the brass coach of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra. He won the ITA award in 2012, a lifetime honour bestowed by the International Trombone Association. Despite living outside of the UK for 20 years, Ian remains obsessed with cricket. He is a connoisseur of Burgundy wines, and in 2017, he was honoured by the region, being made a ‘Chevalier de Tastevin’
