Mario Vega

DIRECTOR AND PLAYWRIGHT

In 1999, he founded Producciones del Mar (now known as Unahoramenos Producciones). He took on projects of cultural administration, distribution, and production. In 2018, he directed the project Laboratorio Galdós. This project used the life and work of Benito Pérez Galdós to engage in open processes of participation, innovation, and performing-arts research. Three shows emerged from Laboratorio Galdós: ANA, también a nosotros nos llevará el olvido, by Irma Correa (2018); El crimen de la Calle Fuencarral, by Fabio Rubiano (2019); and El último viaje de Galdós, by Laila Ripoll and Mariano Llorente (2020). All of these shows were directed by Vega. The success of Laboratorio Galdós (2018-2020) was confirmed with the project's renewal and a new tour. It was rebranded as Laboratorio Galdós internacional, which incorporated the values of the previous project and fostered cultural exchanges with Europe, America, and Africa. This context gave rise to Clara y el Abismo (2021) by the Uruguayan playwright Gabriel Calderón; Patriotas (2022) by Julio Salvatierra; and Protocolo del quebranto (2023) by Mario Vega. In 2024, Laboratorio Galdós began a new three-year renewal. This consolidated its focus on performing-arts research and intercultural dialogue with Bar La Resistencia (2024) by Ruth Sánchez and Mario Vega, and SAHARA. La barca del desierto (2025), also written by Ruth Sánchez and Mario Vega. In 2021, he directed MORIA, a show described as an immersive documentary theatre experience. This made Unahoramenos the first Canarian company to receive a Premio Max award. In 2022, he launched the performing-arts project Segunda Lectura. This project is dedicated to staging great works of universal literature, with a focus on revision and contemporary staging. The first step of this undertaking was Tamora, an adaptation of Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus by Gabriel Calderón. This was followed by Mararía la de Femés (2023) and Las Bodas del Fígaro (2024). Under Mario Vega's direction, unahoramenos has won 18 Premios Réplica awards. It has also earned eight "R" ratings for recommended status from the Theatre Commission of the Spanish Network of Theatres, Auditoriums, Circuits and Festivals of Public Ownership; five nominations; and one Premio Max award. All these accolades may be attributed to Vega's direction. Personally, he has received four Premios Réplica awards for best direction, three for best theatrical space, and two nominations for the Premios Max awards for best set design.
