Philippe Jaroussky

countertenor

Philippe Jaroussky has built his international reputation as a leading countertenor. This has been confirmed by the French 'Victoires de la Musique' awards (‘Revelation Artiste Lyrique’ in 2004, ‘Artiste lyrique de l'année’ in 2007 and in 2010) and Echo Klassik Awards 2008 in Munich (“Singer of the Year”), in 2009 in Dresden (with L’Arpeggiata) and again in Berlin in 2016, among others.

Jaroussky's technique allows him to develop the most audacious nuances and impressive pyrotechnics. He has explored a vast Baroque repertoire, from the refinement of the Italian Seicento with Monteverdi, Sances and Rossi, to the staggering brilliance of Handel and Vivaldi arias (singing more music by the latter composer than any other over the last few years). As a tireless researcher, he has contributed to the rediscovery of music by composers such as Caldara, Porpora, Steffani, Telemann and J.C. Bach.

Lately, he has also explored a very different repertoire of French melodies accompanied by the pianist Jerôme Ducros. He has shown his own interpretation of "Les Nuits d'Été" (Berlioz) with performances at the Auditorio Nacional in Madrid and at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. Increasingly captivated by contemporary works, Jaroussky performed a song cycle composed by Marc-André Dalbavie from the sonnets of Louise Labé. In March 2016, he premièred the opera “Only the Sound remains” (Kaija Saariaho) at the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam, at the Paris Opera House in February 2018, and at the Teatro Real de Madrid in November 2018. This opera was specifically composed for his voice, and he also participated in its creation.

Philippe Jaroussky collaborates on a regular basis with some of the best baroque ensembles. He has performed in the most prestigious festivals and concert halls around the world. In 2002 he founded l’Ensemble Artaserse, with which he performs on a regular basis throughout Europe.

In January 2017 Jaroussky inaugurated the new Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, where he was invited as the first artist in residence. The 2019-2020 season marked 20 years of Philippe's career with some major events, such as the unveiling of his statue at the Musée Grévin in Paris, the release of a biographical book and a 3-disc anthology: Passion Philippe Jaroussky.

In March 2021 Philippe Jaroussky swapped the role of singer for that of conductor for the first time at the helm of his ensemble, Artaserse, conducting Scarlatti’s oratorio Cain, overo Il primo omicidio with the soprano Sandrine Piau, the countertenors Christophe Dumaux, Paul-Antoine Benos-Djian and Bruno de Sá, the tenor Kresimir Spicer and the young bass Yannis François. This programme will be performed at the Salzburg Festival and at the Montepellier Opera, where Philippe Jaroussky and Ensemble Artserse will be artists in residence for the next three seasons. Among his most notable projects, he will conduct his Artaserse ensemble in a stage version of Handel's Giulio Cesare, with Damiano Michieletto as director (a co-production of the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées).

With an astonishing discography, Philippe Jaroussky, the Vivaldi Edition and the independent label Naïve joined forces together with Jean-Christophe Spinosi and the Ensemble Matheus. He has been recording exclusively for the Erato-Warner Classics label for many years and has received numerous awards for his recordings.

For the last three years he has been working on one of his most personal projects: The Philippe Jaroussky Academy, which aims to help young musicians suffering from cultural isolation through original, extensive and demanding classes. It is located at La Seine Musicale, an impressive new venue in Boulogne-Billancourt.

In Spain he has performed at the Teatro Real de Madrid, Gran Teatre del Liceu de Barcelona, Auditorio Nacional de Madrid, L'Auditori de Barcelona, Palau de la Música de Valencia, Auditori de Girona, Teatro de la Maestranza de Sevilla, Auditorio de Zaragoza, Baluarte de Pamplona, or Centro Kursaal de San Sebastián.

Jaroussky was named “Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres” in 2009 by the French government.

Philippe Jaroussky and Ensemble Artaserse are supported by the Gisèle Tissier-Grandpierre Foundation of the French Institute.
