Pilar Cabrera

organist

Born in Granada, at the age of fourteen she made her debut on the historic organ of the Imperial Church of San Matías. She trained at the Conservatoires of Granada, Malaga, Seville, Barcelona and the Higher School of Music in Düsseldorf, and undertook further studies with Montserrat Torrent (Barcelona), Daniel Roth (Paris) and Rosalinde Haas (Frankfurt am Main).

In 1984 she obtained First Place for Organ in the Permanent Competition of the Musical Youth of Spain. In 1986 she produced her first album recording, with the label CBS, on Marbella’s Blancafort Organ;  she has been the organist on this instrument for 18 years. Her CD Die Sonnenorgel von Marbella with the label Motette, whose first copy was devoted to Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain, received excellent reviews in the international music press.

She gave different piano performances, but the organ would become the instrument that she would devote all her attention to, and since 1982 she has performed internationally as a soloist and alongside different groups as a duo with trumpet, duo with oboe, percussion, with a metal group, traditional instruments, choir, with chamber orchestras and symphony orchestras.

Her performances notably include those at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Madrid, the Monastery of El Escorial, Auditorio Manuel de Falla of Granada, Auditorio Alfredo Kraus of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Auditorio Nacional de Música of Madrid, Teatro Real of Madrid, Auditorio John F. Kennedy Center of Washington, the University of Sacramento/California, Lisboa Expo' 98, Salamanca 2002, the National Palace of Mafra/Portugal, concerts and recordings for radio and television in different Organ Series and Festivals in Mexico, Austria, Switzerland, the Cathedral of Bruges, the Cathedral of Brussels, etc.

Her interest in promoting contemporary composition for organ, has led her to premiere works by the prestigious composers Jesús Legido (Valladolid), Miguel Pérez (Malaga), Ronald Watson (England), Lee Axford (England), and Guido Donati (Italy).

At present, Pilar Cabrera combines her concert activity with teaching and liturgical work. She is a teacher at the Official Music Centre of Castile, an organist in the Church of Saint Andrew the Apostle, and at the Cathedral of Valladolid, where she works intensely as a soloist, educator and disseminator of the vast organ repertoire, and thus far she has recorded 45 CDs of live concerts.
