Teatre de Dos
Gerard Vázquez y Pepe Zapata
Teatre de Dos is a theatrical troupe formed through the creative collaboration of three outstanding figures from the theatre scene in Catalonia: Pepe Zapata, Gerard Vázquez and Jordi Barra. Their complementary career paths have made the troupe a realm of dialogue, drawing on fields of acting, playwriting, and historical memory, bringing the past and present into focus through a lens of critique and poetry. Pepe Zapata is an actor and producer with a solid background from the Col·legi del Teatre and the Universidad de Barcelona, where he founded the troupe Passport Theatre. He has worked with acclaimed figures, such as Txiqui Berraondo, Boris Rotenstein and Berty Tovías, and he was a member of Teatre Kaddish and the founder of Teatre KM0 Bluelegged. His theatrical work includes the staging of works such as Martin Sherman’s Bent, Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Eugène Ionesco’s La cantante calva and J.P. Shanley’s Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, for which he won an award for the best theatrical performance at Mostra de Teatre Jove of the regional government of Catalonia. As a playwright and director, Gerard Vázquez is among the most prominent voices in contemporary Catalan theatre. Trained under the guidance of José Sanchis Sinisterra at Sala Beckett, he has premiered adaptations of classics such as Fellini’s La Strada and Melville’s Bartleby, in addition to his own awarded works such as Cansalada Cancel·lada (SGAE Award), El somriure del guanyador (Ciutat d’Alcoi Award), Uuuuh! (Winner of the Butaca award and nominated for a Premio Max award) and Quid pro quo (Recull award). His work El retratista, co-written with Jordi Barra, has been published in several languages and adapted to the big screen in El pallasso i el Führer. Jordi Barra, theatrical historian and author, has been associated with formations such as ETAAMI and Lo Conill, and he has written works such as Mira enrere! and La entrega. His collaboration with Vázquez on El retratista garnered accolades, including the Serra d’Or award. Barra is also known for his work as a cultural spokesperson through several radio broadcasters, as well as for his cartography and curating exhibitions on historical memory, such as Víctimes (1936–1945) and Las fronteras de Barcelona. Teatre de Dos is known for its contemporary playwrighting, rigorous interpretation and willingness to engage in dialogue with history and identity. The troupe explores past wounds and present tensions from a lucid, humanist perspective, turning each staging into a profound and transformative theatrical experience.
