Reyes Oteo composed the music for this chamber opera, which will be performed at Auditorio de Tenerife
The third edition of ‘Ópera en minúscula’ concludes on Saturday, 3 October, with La clausura del amor by Reyes Oteo, at 7.00 p.m. in the Chamber Hall. The production is a co-production between Auditorio de Tenerife, the Comunidad de Madrid and Teatro Xtremo, and received its world premiere last July as part of the ‘Ópera a quemarropa’ series in Madrid.
The production forms part of the ‘Ópera de Tenerife’ pre-season, an initiative of the Tenerife Island Council through Auditorio de Tenerife, sponsored by the Canary Islands Institute for Cultural Development of the Government of the Canary Islands and Spain’s National Institute of Performing Arts and Music (INAEM). This third edition of Ópera en minúscula also benefits from the collaboration of La Laguna City Council.
Ricardo Campelo is responsible for the stage direction, set design and video, while the lighting and costume designs are by Alicia Soriano and Rhina, respectively. Soprano Ruth González and baritone Enrique Sánchez-Ramos make up the cast, portraying a man and a woman at the end of their relationship. They now find themselves face to face. He speaks first, while she listens intently. Then she speaks, and he listens to her words in silence. A shared history is laid bare.
These are the essential elements of La clausura del amor. The work began life as a play by French playwright Pascal Rambert, which premiered at the Avignon Festival in 2011 and has since been performed in more than twenty countries. Its success lies in a verbal duel in which language becomes a weapon, a repository of memory and a means of saying goodbye. Now, the work takes on a new form as a chamber opera.
Music, singing and experimental staging come together in a work that places the audience at the heart of an intimate confrontation, poised between voice and body, heartbreak and beauty. In this version, Rambert’s text is transformed into musical material, performed live by a quartet and complemented by striking theatrical devices, including a camera that captures and projects live close-ups of the two singers’ expressions as they confront one another on stage.
