This year, 131 people took part, ranging in age from 7 to 78

Yesterday (Sunday 31st), the Chamber Hall of the Auditorio de Tenerife hosted the ceremony to present diplomas to students from the Theatre Schools, a scheme run by the Tenerife Island Council in collaboration with local councils. A total of 131 students, aged between 7 and 78, took part in this course. The event was attended by the island’s minister for Culture, José Carlos Acha, and the Mayor of La Orotava, Francisco Linares.

Fifteen groups of different ages have taken part in this year’s programme (2025–2026). The programme has been organised across a dozen local councils on the island: Adeje, Arona, El Rosario, El Sauzal, Fasnia, Granadilla, Guía de Isora, La Laguna, La Orotava and Tegueste.

José Carlos Acha addressed the students who had gathered in the Chamber Hall. He told them, “You are an important part of the cultural life of the island.” “The Theatre Schools began in 2002 and, apart from the outbreak of the pandemic, have continued uninterrupted to this day, with over 9,500 participants.”

The island’s minister for Culture highlighted the complexity of this initiative. It has been made possible through collaboration among the authorities. Acha emphasised that “Theatre Schools cannot be run solely by the City Council, which is why I am grateful for the involvement of the various local councils in making the participants’ dreams a reality”.

The island’s head of culture also highlighted the work of the course tutors: Miguel Ángel Batista, Francisco Gómez, José Rodríguez and Víctor Torres. The project was coordinated by Martha Quiñones.

The Tenerife Theatre Schools network runs throughout the school year in municipal cultural venues. It provides theatre training to children, young people and adults. The aim is to foster a high-quality appreciation of arts and contribute to the cultural development of the local community.
