The sopranist Samuel Mariño and the ensemble Concerto de’ Cavalieri will perform this Thursday in the Chamber Hall.
This Thursday (19 June), the Auditorio de Tenerife’s Chamber Music Cycle will feature sopranist Samuel Mariño and the ensemble Concerto de’ Cavalieri, conducted by Marcelo Di Lisa. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. “Mi gran viaje por Italia” (My Great Italian Journey) is a highly personal exploration of Italian Baroque music, featuring well-known classics and lesser-known works, all designed to allow the public to hear and enjoy the singular voice of Mariño.
The programme in the Chamber Hall will feature a selection of ten works. The concert opens with three works by Vivaldi: Agitata da due venti from Griselda, Dite oimé! from La Fida Ninfa RV 714, and Violin Concerto in D major RV 212a For the Solemnity of the Tongue of St. Anthony. Vanne pentita a piangere from Il trionfo dell’innocenza and Un pensiero nemico di pace, aria from Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno, by Antonio Caldara and George Frideric Handel, respectively, will complete the first part.
Mariño and the ensemble will return after the break with two new Vivaldi pieces: Vedrò con mio diletto (aria from Il Giustino RV 717) and Quell’augellin che canta (aria from La Silvia RV 734). The programme continues with Corelli’s Concerto in D major, Op. 6, No. 4, Caldo Sangue from Sedecia, Rè di Gerusalemme, by Domenico Scarlatti. The concert concludes with Anch’il mar par che sommerga from Il Bajazet RV 703 by Vivaldi.
Samuel Mariño’s innate musicality and unique vocal talent have prepared him for a career that allows him to explore various operatic roles within a repertoire of Baroque and classical works. Samuel Mariño started his studies in piano and voice at the National Conservatory of Music, and his first operatic experiences were with Camerata Barroca in Caracas, where he worked with conductors such as Gustavo Dudamel, Helmuth Rilling and Theodore Kuchar. These collaborations spurred his passion for Baroque repertoire and inspired him to continue his studies at the Conservatory of Paris.
Samuel Mariño debuted at the 2018 Handel Festival in Halle as Alessandro in Handel’s Berenice, a performance for which he was nominated for the Best New Artist award by the journal Opernwelt. Subsequent portrayals include Demetrio in Gluck’s Angigono with the Halle Handel Festival Orchestra conducted by Michael Hofstetter at the Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth, Tamiri in Angesi’s Il Re Pastore with the Katowice Academy Baroque Orchestra, Curiazio in Cimarosa’s Gli Orazi e i Curiazi for the Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg, and the theatrical performances of Handel’s La Resurrezione at the Stadttheater Giessen conducted by Michael Hofstetter.
Concerto de’ Cavalieri has been considered one of the most vibrant and exciting Italian ensembles dedicated to period-instrument performance. The ensemble’s goal is to take a new approach to Baroque music through its focus on colourful execution adapted to the rhythms of the modern world. Among the venues where this formation has played are Amsterdam, Vienna, Madrid, Hamburg, Essen, Cologne, Munich, Metz, Lisbon, Milan, Bremen, and Bilbao.
Harpsichordist and conductor Marcello Di Lisa is the founder of Concerto de’ Cavalieri. Under his direction, the ensemble has quickly become one of Italy’s leading period-instrument orchestras. He completed a PhD in philology and Greek and Latin literature at the University of Pisa and collaborated with major journals in the field of ancient philosophy, simultaneously studying piano, harpsichord and composition.
