Under the skilful leadership of conductor Ariane Matiakh, this programme celebrates the visionary power of music in the bonding of roots, emotions and future. The evening begins with the world premiere of Pozos del Olvido by Óscar Colomina, commissioned by the Sinfónica de Tenerife. The work is based on a Chinese legend about the moment that the shades of the dead approach the waters of forgetfulness before their reincarnation. Clara-Jumi Kang, one of today’s great solo violinists, interprets Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1.
Next on the programme is the pioneer of modern music, Franz Liszt. His symphonic poem Hungaria, with its love of homeland and free structure, reveals the composer as a pioneer of new forms of expression who paved the way for Wagner, Debussy and Mahler. As the evening draws to a close, the orchestra unleashes all its colour and rhythmic power in Zoltán Kodály’s Dances of Galánta, a reinterpretation of Hungarian folklore composed with mastery, freshness and emotion.
