Violencia
Synopsis
Auditorio de Tenerife presents Violencia, a play by Diego Garrido Sanz to be performed in the venue’s theatre hall La Salita.
Beatriz isn’t sure if she’s ready for an interview that’s due to start in 10 minutes. Her husband Martín is with her. But the pain is unbearable. It’s been years since her last encounter with Ricardo and Amelia, the parents of her son’s killer. But Beatriz needs to comprehend—or at least to try one last time—how such an atrocity could ever have happened. She needs closure to get on with her life, and she’s willing to do whatever it takes.
Six years later, the two couples have agreed to meet. And what begins as an attempt to fathom the past becomes a process that is as painful as it is necessary. They talk about their sons’ childhoods and the bullying they were put through at school—the talk about loneliness, regret and mourning. Ricardo and Amelia are filled with remorse for not having seen the signs. Martín and Beatriz are enraged after losing all that mattered to them. However, from this seemingly bottomless pit of despair, the possibility of forgiveness emerges. One small and silent gesture changes everything: they grasp each other’s hands. And, for an instant, there is light. There is life. There is a future.
This story is about two parents who need to embrace forgiveness after their son’s death at the hands of another teenager. But it is also the story of the parents of that teenager, who committed suicide after killing several of his classmates.
There will be a discussion with the audience after Friday’s performance, moderated by students from the Canary Islands School of Acting, thanks to a collaboration agreement.
This story is about the survival of trauma through dialogue. In a world in which rage, violence and vengeance fill our streets, forgiveness and dialogue can become the most powerful and transformative tools for big societal change.
The play premiered at the Festival de Otoño de Madrid in November 2024 as one of the featured works of Pilar de Yzaguirre. It was immensely successful, with an entire week of sold-out performances, which led to a run at the Centro Dramático Nacional de Madrid from November 28 to December 30, 2025.
