Roméo et Juliette
Synopsis
Ópera de Tenerife is staging a new in-house production of Charles Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette.
Shakespeare’s tragedy Romeo and Juliet evokes musical romanticism. However, intergenerational conflict is the central idea that defines this production. The staging offers us another interpretation of the libretto, one that is more interested in showing us the antagonism between generations: adults committed to their own violence, in a patriarchal and misogynistic environment; and young people who openly oppose this legacy of hatred through the love that Roméo and Juliette profess for each other. This is an opera of musical and scenic contrasts, of light and darkness.
In Gounod’s music, we find a style that fuses the lyricism of Italian opera with the refined elegance of the French tradition, which serves as the thread running through this vision that goes beyond a love story. With an orchestra that reinforces the singing and drama with its marked articulations and dynamics, and a choir that not only supports the dramatic elements of the action but also actively participates in it.
