Synopsis

Mario Vega is to undertake an artist residency on playwriting research  in the La Salita hall  of the Auditorio de Tenerife from 7 to 11 April. The residency titled Despiezando el matadero (Breaking Down the Slaughterhouse) presents a free public showing on 12 April at 12 noon. Entry is free until full capacity is reached.

This event has been cancelled due to a technical issue.

Director and playwright Mario Vega will undertake this artist residency at the Auditorio de Tenerife to create a script inspired by Kurt Vonnegut’s novel Slaughterhouse-Five. This immersive, documentary project seeks to explore and expand the universal themes of Vonnegut’s work in contemporary terms.

During his residency, Vega will delve into a process of deep investigation and multidisciplinary encounters. Vega will offer a series of dialogues, using Vonnegut’s novel as a springboard, along with its non-linear narrative, post-war trauma, science fiction and extraterrestrials. Teaming up with pundits on ufology and unidentified flying objects, the playwright will seek to draw parallels between the abductions of Billy Pilgrim and perceptions of alleged extraterrestrial contact in today’s world.

The research will also address the human element of conflict, not only through a historical perspective on war but also through interviews with veterans of armed conflict. The conversations will attempt to shed light on the psychological and existential side-effects of violence and dehumanisation, and the quest for truth in times of chaos.

The research resulting from this residency at the Auditorio de Tenerife is intended to be an onstage reflection on how human beings process trauma, our perception of reality, the passage of time, and our relationship with the unknown.
