Synopsis
La Salita presents Noche by Alejandro Sawa, in a production by Teatro Español and the Micomicón theatre company. Friday’s opening performance will be followed by a discussion with the audience.
Written in 1888, Alejandro Sawa’s Noche offers a revealing glimpse into the emergence of naturalism in the arts in Spain at a time marked by hunger and poverty, yet dominated by the need to keep up appearances.
The play tells the story of Don Francisco, an authoritarian and deeply religious father who seeks to maintain order and virtue within his household through repression and faith. Yet his obsession with morality and appearances ultimately leads him to witness the destruction of the very thing he strives so desperately to protect: his own family.
Against a backdrop of hunger, social hypocrisy and decadence, Sawa lays bare the destructive effects of religious fanaticism, poverty and rigid social conventions. The originality and power of his work help explain why Valle-Inclán drew inspiration from Sawa when creating one of his most enduring characters, Max Estrella.

Doors at La Salita open between 15 and 5 minutes before the performance begins.
Once the venue doors have closed for the start of the performance, no further admission will be permitted.
Admission is restricted to those aged five and over.
