ORFEO ED EURIDICE
Synopsis
Ópera de Tenerife stages Orfeo ed Euridice by Christoph W. Gluck, in a new in-house production, featuring musical direction by Jordi Francés conducting the Concerto München ensemble with the stage direction by Mal Pelo’s creative team, Pep Ramis and María Muñoz. Thus, baroque opera becomes a regular feature of the season, now available as part of the subscription.
In this sober but content-rich production, the Mal Pelo theater company develops its own artistic interpretation of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, of love and loss. Movement is therefore one of the narrative elements in both the scenography and the physical dimension.
This work represents a decisive moment in the evolution of operatic language: words are exalted by song, and not the other way around; the ornamentation and vocal virtuosity so characteristic of the opera seria of the time are suppressed; and the choir is given a dramatic function.
The performance will feature a Baroque orchestra, but not as a historicist exercise simulating the sound of the period, but rather as a performative exercise, with the aim of translating the code of the 18th century to the ears of today’s audience.
