THE FLYING DUTCHMAN
Synopsis
Ópera de Tenerife presents Wagner’s staged repertoire with Der fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman).
The Tenerife Auditorium is staging a Wagner opera for the first time, which is a milestone in our opera programming. Following concert versions of Tannhäuser and Parsifal, Ópera de Tenerife continues its Wagnerian journey with Der fliegende Holländer. This is an early Wagner who is beginning to experiment with leitmotifs. Rather than through words, the story is told through musical development, which completes the narrative and adds a psychological dimension to the story.
In this dramatically and scenically concise performance, Der fliegende Holländer tells the story of Senta. She is the protagonist of this opera with a masculine title, which unfolds in a cold atmosphere with rough seas and a suffocating, violent, macho environment from which Senta tries to isolate herself through the mythical figure of the Dutch sailor. The chorus incorporates and reinforces the social pressure to which Senta is subjected in this complex society contaminated by the egocentric patriarchal gaze.
