Owen Wingrave
Synopsis
Ópera de Tenerife presents Benjamin Britten’s Owen Wingrave, a two-act opera about a young man who renounces his family’s military legacy and rejects his future as a soldier. The performances will constitute the opera’s premiere in Spain.
Owen decides to oppose war, putting him at odds with his family, who, for generations, have responded unflinchingly when called to duty. His decision to break the chain of violence makes him an outcast, a problem and a traitor. No one wants to hear of his ethics; they only want him to obey. It is the story of the individual who, in times of armed conflict and warmongering, dares to dissent from the consensus. The walls of the house, crowded with portraits and military glory, echo a system that refuses to change. His conscience is left to face alone the clamour of tradition.
The opera will be sung in English with overtitles in Spanish and English.
