Powder Her Face
Synopsis
Ópera de Tenerife presents Thomas Adès’ chamber opera Powder Her Face at the Teatro Leal. This contemporary opera focuses on the controversial love life and divorce of Margaret, the Duchess of Argyll, in the 1960s. Employing an explicit, satirical tone, it tells the story of her fall from societal favour, from opulence to ruin and solitude, marked by her romantic entanglements and widespread gossip. The performances will constitute the opera’s premiere in Spain.
The Duchess lives trapped by luxury, desire, and scandal. Many contribute to her downfall: lovers, staff, journalists, judges, and a society that first consumes, then condemns her. People talk about her, but rarely to her. Her privacy is devoured by the public eye, but responsibility for the moral circus is ignored. In an era of media lynching, social cancelling and double standards, Powder Her Face challenges us: how much of that silent judgment is ours?
This opera will be performed with singing in English and overtitles in Spanish and English.
